Tidy up timer
Pick a length, name one zone, press start. The bar drains as the time goes, so your child can see the finish coming. When it stops, you stop. That last part is the whole trick.

How to run a tidy up with a timer
- Name the zone, not the room. The floor. The desk. The bit under the bed. A zone has an edge; a room does not.
- Pick the length out loud. Ten minutes is a good default. Five is a better default on a bad day. Say it, then stick to it.
- Put the timer where they can see it. Not your phone in your pocket. Prop this screen up where the bar is visible while they work.
- Work alongside if you can. Not supervising. Doing. One category at a time if the pile is big: all the books, then all the clothes.
- Stop when it stops. This is the whole deal. Extending the timer turns a short job back into an endless one, and you lose the next one.
Why a timer, not another song
A tidy up song works for the same reason a timer does: it turns an open-ended job into one with a start and a stop. The song wears off when it stops being funny. The timer only has to keep its promise. The research behind that, including where it is thin, is in the 10 minute tidy up, done well and visual timers for kids.
If the mess is too big for one zone, break it down first with chores by room, or pick jobs that fit with chores by age.
Questions parents ask
Is this tidy up timer free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up, no app and no ads. Pick 2, 5, 10 or 15 minutes, press start and prop the screen up where your child can see the bar drain.
How long should a tidy up take?
For a child, ten minutes on one named zone is a good default, and five on a bad day. The point is a job with a visible end, not a tidy room. Expect a dent, stop when the timer stops, and do the next zone another time.
Is this a visual timer for kids?
Yes. As well as the digits, a coloured bar drains as the time goes and shifts colour past halfway and near the end, so a child can see how much is left without reading a clock.
Do tidy up songs work better than a timer?
A tidy up song is a timer in disguise: it shows when the job ends, which is most of what makes it bearable. Songs tend to wear off once the novelty does. A visible timer keeps the useful part without needing to stay funny.
Does the timer keep the screen on?
On most recent phones and tablets it asks the browser to keep the screen awake while it runs. Some browsers refuse, so if the screen dims, raise the auto-lock time in your device settings for the tidy up.
